Understanding the Legislature

Brandy began her career in public service as a legislative intern in the Texas House of Representatives. She worked for three members of the Legislature and rose steadily through the ranks of the Texas Capitol. In 2007, she began working for Governor Rick Perry and served his administration as a special assistant, legislative liaison, director of budget and policy, and deputy chief of staff.

In 2013, Perry selected Brandy to serve as his Chief of Staff. In that role, she shepherded Governor Perry’s legislative priorities that overhauled the state’s Medicaid system, established funding to protect our water resources for generations to come, and dedicated revenue to improving our state’s transportation network. Brandy also managed executive branch agency operations, including those of the Texas Education Agency, Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Texas Department of Information Resources.

Understanding Texas

Perry appointed Marquez to the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC), which regulates the state’s wholesale electric market. Her tenure at the Commission was marked by her work to ensure Texans received affordable, reliable electricity.

While serving as Commissioner, Brandy approved the sale of the largest utility in Texas. The Commission’s approval concluded one of the largest bankruptcies in American history.

Gov. Abbott said of Marquez, “The State of Texas has benefited greatly from the more than 17 years of dedicated service from Brandy Marquez after her stint in public service. Her commitment and passion for public service have been on full display throughout her impressive career.”

In addition to her public service, Brandy served as the policy director for a successful Texas gubernatorial campaign and senior policy adviser for a presidential campaign.
